In Rüdesheim we took the gondola up the mountain to the Germania monument, commemorating Germany's independence in the 1880's. The ride and monument gave great views of the city and river.
Rüdesheim is the only place in Germany where 1km equals 550 meters. The river has distance markers each kilometer. Apparently, surveyors started at each end and began surveying towards the middle. When they met in Rüdesheim there were only 550 meters between the last two measurements, thus a 550 meter kilometer!
This shows the extensive flooding. That's an island in the middle of the river, just the trees can be seen.
Dru and friend Mary Ann decided to indulge themselves by partaking of Rüdesheim's famous coffee. A bit wicked, so they shared.
